Education
The challenges facing our children’s education system were apparent even before the pandemic struck. The advent of COVID-19 has significantly widened the global learning gap, impacting the educational journey of children worldwide. Now, more than ever, a unified global effort is essential to confront this educational crisis, ensuring every child has the opportunity to excel in fundamental areas such as literacy and numeracy.
In Ghana, the landscape of educational inequality presents a multifaceted challenge, characterized by stark disparities rooted in economic status, gender, and geographic location. Efforts by both governmental and non-governmental organizations have been instrumental in addressing these issues, yet regional imbalances continue to prevail, often intensified by prevailing local poverty levels. A case in point is the Upper West region of Ghana, where educational deficiencies are acute. The Upper West region has the lowest completion rate for lower secondary education in Ghana at 15%. The region also has a significant number of children and youth who are out of school, with 33.2% at the lower secondary level and 48.7% at the upper secondary level. It also records one of the lowest literacy rates in Ghana at 48.5% for males and 33.5% for females. This grave situation is further highlighted by data from the Nandom Municipal, where a concerning 13.5% pass rate was recorded in the 2021 Basic Education Certificate Examination by the West African Examination Council.
Such statistics underscore the urgent need for intervention. The Sangu Delle Foundation, cognizant of these challenges, has initiated scholarship and grant programs to support individuals and schools in dire need. Beyond financial aid, the Foundation also acknowledges and rewards the hard work and achievements of students and educators in the municipality, fostering a culture of meritocracy and educational excellence.
Recognizing the critical role of holistic development in education, the Foundation has also launched a youth development and sports program designed to complement academic initiatives. This program aims to harness the potential of sports as a tool for building discipline, teamwork, and leadership skills among young people. By constructing and rehabilitating sports facilities, organizing inter-school sports competitions, and integrating sports into the broader education framework, the Foundation seeks to nurture well-rounded individuals who excel not only academically but also in character and resilience. These efforts provide an avenue for youth to explore their talents while fostering a sense of community and healthy competition.
