Health

The health challenges facing Ghana are multifaceted, reflecting disparities that span across economic, gender, and geographic lines. Despite nationwide improvements in health outcomes, significant gaps persist, especially in rural and underserved areas like the Upper West Region. These disparities have profound implications for the nation’s overall health and development, necessitating targeted, strategic interventions.

Nandom, a district in the Upper West Region, epitomizes these challenges. It grapples with issues such as limited healthcare infrastructure, inadequate staffing, and high disease burdens. Nandom District Hospital, a pivotal healthcare provider in the area, confronts these challenges daily, striving to offer essential services amidst severe resource constraints.

For example, maternal mortality rates in the Upper West Region are notably higher than the national average, with a rate of 319 deaths per 100,000 live births compared to the national average of 308. Additionally, the prevalence of communicable diseases such as malaria is disproportionately high, with the Upper West reporting incidence rates significantly above the national mean. Mental health services are also notably insufficient; the region has only 0.1 psychiatrists per 100,000 people, starkly lower than the national average of 0.4.

These health indicators—particularly concerning maternal and child health, communicable diseases, and access to mental health services—highlight the urgent need for enhanced support and interventions in regions like Nandom.

In recognition of these challenges, the Sangu Delle Foundation is launching a comprehensive health initiative in Ghana, beginning with targeted interventions in Nandom. Our dual focus aligns with the critical needs identified:

Sir Dr. Gyader Healthcare Fund: Understanding the pivotal role of the St. Theresa’s hospital and the network of clinics in Nandom in the local healthcare ecosystem, our foundation will invest in enhancing their capacity to deliver quality care.

This support will encompass upgrading medical facilities, providing medical equipment and supplies, and enhancing the skills of healthcare personnel. By bolstering the resources of healthcare facilities, we aim to improve healthcare delivery not just for Nandom, but also for the surrounding communities, ensuring broader regional health impacts.

Rev. Sr. Domitilla Mental Health Grants: Acknowledging the often-overlooked aspect of mental health, our foundation is committed to addressing this crucial area through targeted grants. These funds will support the development and implementation of mental health programs, training for mental health professionals, and community awareness campaigns in Nandom and eventually across Ghana. By prioritizing mental health, we aspire to break down stigma, provide essential support services, and promote overall well-being.

#EndGalamsey Grants: Recognizing the detrimental impact of illegal mining activities (galamsey) on community health, our foundation is also addressing the intersection of environmental degradation and public health. The #EndGalamsey Grants initiative will provide support to community-based organizations working to combat the health and environmental hazards posed by galamsey. By funding initiatives that tackle water contamination, respiratory diseases from dust and pollution, and other health crises linked to illegal mining, we aim to protect vulnerable populations and restore healthier living environments in affected areas.

As we initiate these interventions in Nandom, our vision is to create a replicable model of health support that can be extended throughout Ghana. We believe that by concentrating our efforts on both immediate healthcare infrastructure and the overarching need for mental health support, we can contribute significantly to the health and vitality of the Ghanaian population.

Our journey begins in Nandom, but our commitment is to all of Ghana. By addressing critical health needs at both local and national levels, the Sangu Delle Foundation aims to catalyze lasting health improvements across the country, ensuring a healthier future for every Ghanaian.
